Dodge Kingsway - 1957
Car

Dodge Kingsway - 1957 Car owned by late MGR (famous movie actor and former chief minister of Tamilnadu) Rolls Royce Patiala State No. 9 -20th Aug 2017- It was really nice to see a collection of vintage cars, at "The Chennai Heritage Auto Show 2017". This was presented by;Madras Heritage Motoring Club. About 120 classic cars were on display. The best part was that all of them were in running condition. The owners spend a fortune to own and maintain these cars in immaculate condition. #dodge #dodgekingsway #gmmotors #mgr #mgrscar #1957 #sriramachandraconventioncentre #heritageautoshow #madrasheritagemotoringclub #thiruvanmiyur #chennai #tamilnadu #india #india #vintage #heritage #vintagecars #vintagebikes #heritagecars #heritagebikes #oldcars #oldmotorcycles #oldbikes #carphotography #carphoto #automobile #heritageauto #heritageautomobiles #oldcar

The drive from Chennai to

The drive from Chennai to Madurai is extremely beautiful. Though we struggled to get out of Chennai. This is my personal feeling (based on observation) that people here drive weirdly. Shifting from one lane to other, not giving space to go ahead and then callous driving. From Chennai to the ouskirts it took as almost an hour. Since we were staying already on the outer side of Chennai, we took lesser time else I think you shall take another one hour to get to the outskirts. . . But almost after 100 kms, we could find a clear road to enjoy the road trip. . . This series is dedicated to my little red louspeaker. It makes my life musical and life is beautiful. #chennaitomadurai #roadtrip #chennai #southindia #traveltrip #femaletravellers #femaleswhotravel #travelseries #philips #loudspeaker #travelogues #travelgrams #travelwriting #travelwriter #nomads #Nomadic #nomadiclife #Nomadlife

Chennai aka Madras.I was

Chennai aka Madras.I was brought up here in the 90's in the generation of its name change.12 years of my happy early childhood days. I left. After 6 years,I came back again. This time I am still here for 6 years and counting.Rather than the cliche saying Chennai has given people everything they want. It's the other way around.People take everything from it. Through naked eyes, we can see it's resources being destroyed in the name of urbanisation. Now and then,Nature giving us symptoms against it through Vardha cyclone ,floods etc. We keep on ignoring them. One fine day, we people will be gone. But surely Chennai will remain young. Belated Birthday wishes Madras. Long live. #chennai #chennai378 #madras #urbanisation #igers #ig_asia #indiaphotoproject #citylife #marinalighthouse #marina #clouds #instagood #indiapictures #tamilnadu #southindia #natgeo #street #apfmagazine #ig_India #creativeimagemagazine #balkancollective #shadows #light #indianphotoconcept #indiaphotostory #monochromeindia #bnw_india #beach #marinabeach #blackandwhite

An extract on #chennai

Chennai had the third-largest expatriate population in India at 35,000 in 2009, 82,790 in 2011 and estimated at over 100,000 by 2016. Tourism guide publisher Lonely Planet named Chennai as one of the top ten cities in the world to visit in 2015. Chennai is ranked as a beta-level city in the Global Cities Index and was ranked the best city in India by India Today in the 2014 annual Indian city survey. In 2015 Chennai was named the "hottest" city (worth visiting, and worth living in for long term) by the BBC, citing the mixture of both modern and traditional values. National Geographic ranked Chennai's food as second best in the world; it was the only Indian city to feature in the list. Chennai was also named the ninth-best cosmopolitan city in the world by Lonely Planet. The Chennai Metropolitan Area is one of the largest city economies of India. Chennai is nicknamed "The Detroit of India", with more than one-third of India's automobile industry being based in the city. In January 2015, it was ranked third in terms of per capita GDP. Chennai has been selected as one of the 100 Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.

The name Madras originated even before the British presence was established in India. The origin of the name is unclear; one suggestion of several is that it may have originated from a Portuguese phrase me de Deus, which means "mother of God", due to Portuguese influence on the port city, specifically referring to a Church of St. Mary. According to some sources, Madras was derived from Madraspattinam, a fishing-village north of Fort St George. However, it is uncertain whether the name was in use before the arrival of Europeans. The British military mapmakers believed Madras was originally Mundir-raj or Mundiraj. A Vijayanagar-era inscription dated to the year 1367 that mentions the port of Mdarasanpattanam, along with other small ports on the east coast was discovered in 2015 and it was theorised that the aforementioned port is the fishing port of Royapuram. The nativity of the name Chennai, being of Telugu origin, is clearly proved by historians. It was derived from the name of a Telugu ruler Damarla Chennappa Nayakudu, father of Damarla Venkatapathy Nayak, a Nayak ruler who served as a general under Venkata III of the Vijayanagar Empire from whom the British acquired the town in 1639. The first official use of the name Chennai is said to be in a sale deed, dated 8 August 1639, to Francis Day of the East India Company, even before the Chennakesava Perumal temple was built in 1646. In 1996, the Government of Tamil Nadu officially changed the name from Madras to Chennai. At that time many Indian cities underwent a change of name. However, the name Madras continues in occasional use for the city, as well as for places named after the city such as University of Madras, IIT Madras, Madras Institute of Technology, Madras Medical College, Madras Veterinary College, Madras Christian College.
